Weevil nest

These strange objects are known as 'fairy boots' where they are found, around the Eyre Peninsula of South Australia. They are, in fact, the fossilised nests of the weevil Leptopius duponti. An exact age hasn't been determined, but they are fairly recent - Pleistocene-Holocene. They each have a main opening, and some have a far smaller hole elsewhere.

5-6cm.
